Where there’s a Hive, there’s hope.

Our Mission: Seeding Hope, Harvesting Community

Food is culture, medicine, and memory. At The Hive, we bring hope and healing by creating a community where Indigenous knowledge leads the way.

Through food sovereignty, cultural education, and community wellness, we plant, cook, and learn together. We are restoring vital relationships—to the land, to our languages, and to one another—while creating practical pathways for future generations to carry these teachings forward.

Our Core Pillars

Food Sovereignty

We keep ancestral foods on our tables through community gardens, seed stewardship, and seasonal cooking classes.

Cultural Education

We honor Indigenous ways of knowing through kitchen teaching, story circles, and creating resources for educators.

Community Wellness

We foster belonging, reciprocity, and intergenerational connection through community gatherings and events.

Meet Our Founder

The Hive was founded by Melissa Garrett, an Indigenous chef and educator whose work preserves culture through food, storytelling, and hands-on learning. Melissa leads garden-to-table programming, cooking classes with traditional ingredients, and partnerships with schools and community organizations. Her work has been highlighted on PBS’s Working Capital and regional press for advancing Indigenous foodways in everyday life.

Our Values: T.H.E. H.I.V.E.

Truth: We honor the truths of our history, our ancestors, and our foodways.

Humility: We approach our work with humble hearts, ready to learn from our elders and our youth.

Empowerment: We create opportunities for our community to grow, lead, and thrive.

Honesty: We build trust through transparency and open communication.

Indigenous Values: We center Indigenous knowledge, voices, and ways of being in all that we do.

Equity: We are committed to building a just and equitable food system for all.

Our Journey

The Hive began with a simple practice: plant together, learn together, share together. What started as community meals grew into the gardens, classrooms, and story circles we nurture today, all sustained by community support and our mission-driven stores.

Our 3-Year Vision

Year One – 2025-2026:

Launch The Hive’s website, build community partnerships, and begin collaborative garden projects with Kansas City Community Gardens. Finalize and open our TeacherPayTeacher store and Zeffy donation platform, and set up our Square store with a Buy One, Give One hydroponics option and a few featured items. We’ll hold off on the artist portion of the Square store for now until it’s fully developed.

Year Two – 2026-2027:

Expand food sovereignty programs, host cultural workshops, and strengthen partnerships with schools, libraries, and local organizations.

Year Three – 2027-2028:

Establish a permanent community space with teaching kitchens, hydroponic systems, and year-round cultural and educational programming.
